  • Gasping for Truth: Tracking the Spread of SARS around the world (New York Times Lesson Plan Archives) (Grades 6–12) This is a lesson that could also be applied to the spread of avian flu. Students assess international responses to fighting the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome. Then each student or group of students writes a news report for people in their region of study.
  • Help Is on the Way: Exploring International Relief Efforts to Aid South Asia (New York Times Lesson Plan Archives) (Grades 6–12) Malaysia is one of the South Asian countries affected by the tsunami that struck on December 26, 2004. In this activity, groups of students research and write pages for a guide that gives country-specific information about relief needs and how to meet them. Each individual student then writes a news story that incorporates a personal aspect of relief efforts in the country the group researched.
  • Reaching New Heights (Discovery Education, (Grades 6-8)
    Students learn about the materials and technological advances that allow humans to construct taller and taller buildings. The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, are one example. Pairs of students research one particular building on the list provided and add a picture and facts about it to a class timeline of skyscraper construction. Discussion questions are included.
